Magnetic Clipless Bike Pedals May Be Perfected

by Ben Coxworth, GizMag

Last November we first heard about MagLOCK pedals – clipless mountain bike pedals that use magnets instead of springs to keep the rider’s feet attached, and that can also be used as regular platform pedals. The product fell short of its crowdfunding goal, perhaps because the pedals were kind of clunky, but MagLOCK designer Dave Williams is now back on Kickstarter with a sleeker, lighter and less expensive version.

Unlike their predecessors, the new pedals have a low-profile cutaway design, with a body made from anodized aluminum. They still contain rare earth magnets that engage a steel cleat on the bottom of the rider’s cycling shoe, although those magnets are now cylindrical.

The amount of attraction between MagLOCK pedals and cleats can be adjusted by adding or removing magnets an the weight of the system is now down from 1,540 grams to 974 g per pair of MagLOCK pedals. (Credit: MagLOCK)

As before, the amount of attraction between pedal and cleat – and thus the degree of shoe retention on the pedal – can be adjusted by adding or removing magnets via a stainless steel cover (the rider can release their foot simply by pronating it sideways). A maximum attractive force of 35 lb (16 kg) is possible, which is less than the original model’s 50 lb (23 kg), although Williams claims that it’s still sufficient to keep one’s feet in place even on rough terrain.

The weight of the system is now down from 1,540 grams to 974 g per pair of MagLOCK pedals. By contrast, a pair of Shimano M545 pedals (which combine a platform and an SPD retention mechanism) weigh in at 567 g. According to Dave, however, MagLOCKs allow for more foot-float than SPDs, are easier to engage, and should be less intimidating to riders who are new to foot retention systems.

And yes, they’re cheaper than the old version. Whereas pledge levels for the originals started at US$175, you can currently get a pair of the new ones for $120 – assuming they reach production.

Fun Bike Pic – July 29, Minneapolis – FB4K

With a little help, the world will soon be at her fingertips!

Photo taken at the Southside Sprint Kid’s Race, in Minneapolis, MN, where we noticed a Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K) sticker.

Free Bikes 4 Kidz is a non-profit that accepts donated bikes (used or new), refurbishes them, then gives the bikes away to kids in need. This Fall they will again be looking for people who want to: donate a bike, volunteer to help repair bikes, or make a financial donation to support the program. In 2010 they took in about 1,500 bikes that went to Twin City youth. In 2014, they took in over 5,000 bikes and would like to expand those numbers so more kids have the opportunity to ride a bike.

If you can help [see video], go to FB4K.com to see how you can assist in their fall campaign.

Own A Coffee Shop (Bike) No Royalties

By Ben Coxworth, Giz Mag

It was just this January that we heard about Wheelys 2, an electric-assist cargo trike that doubles as a mobile coffee shop. Although it provides pretty much everything that its owner might need to run their own business, its designers are now introducing the new-and-improved Wheelys 3. Now you can own a coffee shop (bike) no royalties.   [See Video]

Like its predecessor (along with the non-electric Wheelys 1), the Wheelys 3 is the product of Sweden’s Nordic Society For Invention and Discovery (NSID). Also like the Wheelys 2, it includes features such as an insulated compartment for chilled beverages and snacks; a siphon-style coffee brewer; a 10-liter coffee Thermos; a battery-boosting solar panel; and a basin for catching spills.

While the 2 has a single butane burner for heating the brewer, however, the 3 has three burners for three brewers, that can be pulled out once the trike is parked. The temperature of those burners is wirelessly controlled using a custom app, which can also be used for things like keeping track of customer orders and handling payments – including ones made by Bitcoin.

Both hot and cold running water are also now available, as is a mini towable greenhouse for growing one’s own coffee plants. Are many owners likely to use that? Probably not. It could be a useful marketing gimmick, though.

NSID is now raising production funds for the Wheelys 3, on Indiegogo. A pledge of US$2,999 will get you one, when and if they’re ready to roll. Operators purchase the trike, pay a monthly franchise fee, and then regularly receive the coffee beans and other brand-specific supplies needed to run the business. Whatever money they make in sales, they keep.
