When in Bluff Country experience Lanesboro’s Talking Trail

Along the Root River Trail, take in Lanesboro’s Talking Trail. A self-guided, mobile-accessible audio tour that shares short, place-based stories about the town’s historic architecture, cultural heritage, and more. From the map, bike or hike throughout the city to the posted stops with QR codes to give you the full story of each sites rich heritage.

The stories were written by local author, historian, and storyteller Steve Harris, with voice acting done by Lanesboro residents Tim Sailer and Jaclyn June Johnson.

“This project brings our history and community identity to life in a way that is accessible to everyone year-round,” said John Nicol, LHPA Executive Director. “By blending technology with storytelling, visitors and residents can enjoy the season no matter the season.”

What you will learn from the Talking Trail

What the Root River has meant to this community for more than 150 years. How transportation, energy, recreation, never mind its transcendent, tranquil beauty here, can’t be overestimated.

No matter the season, the next time you are in the Driftless Area, connect more deeply with Lanesboro’s rich heritage through the Talking Trail. Begin the 30-point Talking Trail, which features information and a map on the high bluffs that surround the town. Followed by how the Root River, traveled and fished by Native Americans, eventually became a source to fuel grain mills that created the first jobs. Then, how the railroad stabilized this brand-new town of Lanesboro.

As you pedal or walk around town, also learn about Lanesboro’s lost treasures, Church Hill, the History Museum (one of the oldest buildings in town), Sylvan Park, the Commonweal Theatre, and more.
