Family bicycle fun riding to Open Streets Minneapolis. Of the nine Open Streets scheduled this year, your next chance to attend one of these free public gatherings is on August 21st. in the Franklin Avenue area. At each Open Streets event in the Twin Cities enjoy miles of safe, car-free roads so both residents and visitors can walk, bike, shop, participate in spontaneous play activities and get to know one another.

Luce Line Trail Paving Celebrations, Sept. 26

In honor of the Luce Line State Trail paving project, the public is encouraged to attend two special celebrations in Winsted and Hutchinson, MN, Saturday, Sept. 26.

Winsted’s event

An open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony will start at 10 a.m. in Southview Park, which borders the Luce Line trail near the intersection of Baker and Kingsley avenues in Winsted.

Highlights of the day include:

  • a speech from Winsted Mayor Steve Stotko about the trail’s impact on wellness and the community,
  • a historical Luce Line presentation from Gary Lenz, and
  • food provided by the Winsted Lions from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Attendees are welcome to walk, run, or ride on the trail. The event will take place rain or shine.

Hutchinson’s event

Trail enthusiasts near the Hutchinson area will also have plenty of opportunities to celebrate. The grand opening of the newly paved Luce Line trail is part of an “Open Streets Hutchinson” event Sept. 26.

The free event will close a stretch of Third Avenue NW along the Luce Line trail to automobile traffic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., opening the street for people to enjoy being active together as a community. Participants are encouraged to explore the street on foot, bicycles, or skates.

Programmed recreational activities for all ages will take place along the street, and may include yoga, Zumba, games, and dance lessons.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 8 a.m. – Open Streets 10k
  • 10 a.m. – Bike-friendly city award
  • Free paddle sport rentals at Les Kouba Point
  • 10:15 a.m. – Luce Line State Trail ribbon cutting ceremony
  • 10:30 a.m. – Inaugural trail bike ride
  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Open streets activities along Third Avenue NW
  • 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. – Phoenix Drumline
  • Noon to 2 p.m. – Rockin’ Hollywoods band
  • 7:30 p.m. – “ET” movie at Library Square
  • 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Farmers Market at The Depot

The Luce Line State Trail stretches 63 miles (from Plymouth to Cosmos) and is a popular attraction for bikers, hikers, snowmobilers, and equestrian enthusiasts. The paving project includes about 21 miles of the trail, from the Carver County line to McLeod County Road 115 west of Hutchinson. To learn more about the Luce Line, go to www.luceline.com.

South Twin City Metro Penn Fest in its Seventh Year

Now in its 7th year, Open Streets at Penn Fest, in Richfield, MN is on Sunday, September 20th from noon to 4 p.m. and promises to be the bigger and better than ever. With Penn Avenue closed all the way from 76th  Street to the Crosstown (Hwy 62) thousands of people will be strolling the “Avenue”!  Area businesses, crafters, flea market vendors and community groups will be on the street highlighting their wares and/or promoting their services.  Join in on the excitement and the opportunity that will be created by the all the actively on the “ Penn Avenue”.

Highlights of this years event, that encourages healthy living and sustainable transportation, will include various bike related venues.  Fellow bicycle advocates will be staging a bike rodeo.  Expect race competition between the surreys of Wheel Fun Rentals, a Pedal Pub, the pedicabs.

Plus, the library and the historical society have been persuaded to have costumed riders on bikes with a trailer “pedaling” their respective books.

Penn Cycle will again sponsor multiple performances by the BMX stunt cyclists.

Open Streets Minneapolis on Central Ave. this Sunday

As Minneapolis creates a series of bike/walk events this summer, the doors will open once again on Central Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis, MN this Sunday. If you missed this summers first event on June 7, plan on this Sunday, July 12th. Here, Central Avenue will be closed off and the street will be car-free and available for residents and visitors of all ages to walk, bike, skateboard while participating in many of the spontaneous play activities, clinics, food and music attractions along the way.
