Another year of ice bike racing in the Twin Cities is complete with the Penn Cycle – Ice Bike Loppet. This last Saturday on frozen pond in Theodore Wirth Park, in North Minneapolis, Minn., the annual event was held. Again part of the City of Lakes Loppet Festival, see some of this year’s photos at the Penn Cycle Flikr site or links to a couple video’s below.
Each year the Loppet Weekend kicks off with ice bike racing and bikers circle a short track on ice that offers winter commuters, cyclists pining for summer and anyone with a penchant for thrills to have some fun on a cold winter day. Four heats, 8 to 15 riders in each, includes a beginner, intermediate, advanced and women’s category, were contestants circle a circuitous track in a criterium format, for fun and prizes.
